Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence during the 9th edition of Pariksha Pe Charcha on February 6. Addressing students across the country, he described AI as a powerful and positive tool for the present generation. However, he cautioned students against becoming dependent on technology. He said AI can simplify the learning process but cannot replace discipline, effort and independent thinking. The Prime Minister stressed that students must remain active participants in their education. His message focused on balance — use technology for direction and support, but ensure that real understanding and hard work come from within. His remarks come at a time when Artificial Intelligence tools are increasingly being used by students for assignments, research and exam preparation. With AI chatbots and digital study platforms becoming common, the Prime Minister’s message centred on responsible and balanced use of technology in academic life.

AI is a support system, not a substitute

PM Modi said Artificial Intelligence should be seen as a guide. It can help students find information quickly and explore new topics. However, it cannot achieve goals on their behalf. He explained that students must not allow AI to replace reading, writing and critical thinking. True learning requires focus and involvement. Technology can assist, but it cannot automatically build skills or character.

Example: Using AI to choose biographies

Sharing a simple example, the Prime Minister said students can ask AI for recommendations on biographies to read. After receiving suggestions, they can visit a bookstore and buy one of the books.“This way, you are using AI for your benefit, not becoming dependent on it,” he said.He encouraged students to read biographies to understand the struggles and journeys of successful individuals. Such reading builds perspective and motivation. AI can help identify useful books, but the learning happens through reading and reflection.

Balance technology with effort

PM Modi emphasised that technology should make learning easier, not effortless. Students must combine digital tools with discipline and consistent study habits. He added that the present generation has access to advanced tools, but responsibility remains personal. While Artificial Intelligence can support learning, the responsibility for achievement ultimately rests with the student.
