'O Captain, my Captain': Should Congress make room for Amarinder Singh again?
Rahul Gandhi named Captain Amarinder Singh as his favourite BJP leader.

NEW DELHI: Can a party install a new captain, retain the old team and still leave the door open for a former captain who quit the dressing room five years ago? With the leadership chanting ‘O Captain! My Captain!’ the Punjab Congress seems to be attempting to navigate that question precisely ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. With Pargat Singh at the helm, Raja Warring and Charanjit Singh Channi ‘promised’ an active role in the campaign; Sachin Pilot has also left the door open to Captain Amarinder Singh‘s possible return. Can Congress accommodate its old captain without unsettling the new captain and the team?Congress general secretary Sachin Pilot, the party’s Punjab in-charge, on October 15 offered a line that will keep speculation alive: “Politics mein ‘kuch bhi ho sakta hai’ (anything is possible in politics).”Asked about the possibility of former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh returning to Congress, Pilot praised him as a leader who had served Punjab “well” and was “a man of a very tall stature”. He clarified, however, that he had not spoken to Captain Amarinder about his political plans.“I’ve not spoken to him personally about what his future plans are about joining or leaving any party,” Pilot told PTI Videos.

The remark came less than a fortnight after Congress appointed former India hockey captain Pargat Singh as Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president, replacing Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on October 2. It also followed Amarinder’s public criticism of the BJP, the party he joined in 2022, over its handling of Punjab. So, is Congress merely acknowledging political speculation, or could the old captain’s name return to the party’s calculations? And if he does return, where would he fit in a state unit that has just changed leadership and is yet to name a CM face?

The ‘Uncle Amarinder’ connection

The latest speculation began with an unexpected public greeting. On August 6, during an Instagram ‘Ask Me Anything’ session with students, leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi was asked to name his favourite BJP politician.“Captain Amarinder Singh, definitely. I get along with him, he’s cool and he is an expert on military history, so I like him quite a lot,” Rahul Gandhi said, before adding: “Hello, Uncle Amarinder!”The former CM responded that his personal relationship with the Gandhi family would remain, but his political commitment was to the BJP. In a September interview with The Tribune, he said he remained fond of Rahul, Priyanka and Sonia Gandhi, while distinguishing personal relationships from politics.“My personal relationship with the Gandhis will always be there, but my political commitment is to the BJP,” he said.“If tomorrow I tell Rahul, Priyanka or Sonia personally that I’ll be there for them no matter what, I mean it and I’m happy to help,” he added. The indirect exchange was notable because Amarinder Singh’s departure from Congress in September 2021 followed a bitter confrontation with the party’s state leadership. “When you’ve been with somebody for fifty years, they remain your party. I never asked to leave them; they asked me to leave,” Captain Amarinder Singh said recently.

Amarinder’s BJP discontent

The former chief minister’s recent criticism of the BJP has provided the immediate backdrop to the comeback speculation. In an interview published by The Tribune on September 25, Amarinder said the BJP had not consulted him on Punjab politics or policy despite his long experience in the state.“I haven’t had a single meeting on Punjab policy or politics with them in the last five years,” he said.He was more direct about his decision to join the party: “I have gained nothing by joining BJP.”

Amarinder also argued that the BJP did not adequately understand Punjab and should consult leaders familiar with the state’s political and social realities. He advocated an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal, pointing to the BJP’s historical position as the junior partner in that relationship. In the same interview, he described himself as going through “difficult times”, without elaborating.Yet he has also made clear that dissatisfaction does not automatically mean departure. Amarinder Singh said it was his duty to tell the BJP what he thought about Punjab and that criticising the party’s approach did not mean he was quitting.

From a 77-seat victory to a bitter exit

Captain Amarinder Singh’s record in Congress spans decades, including two terms as Punjab CM, from 2002 to 2007 and from 2017 to 2021.In the 2017 assembly election, Congress won 77 of Punjab’s 117 seats under his leadership, returning to power after a decade. But the relationship between Amarinder Singh and the state leadership deteriorated, particularly amid his prolonged confrontation with Navjot Singh Sidhu.Sidhu became Punjab Congress president in July 2021. The conflict intensified over leadership and the government’s handling of election promises. On September 18, 2021, Amarinder resigned as chief minister after the Congress high command called a meeting of the party’s legislators to discuss leadership.

Sachin Pilot kept the door open to Amarinder Singh’s return to the Congress.

He subsequently left Congress and launched the Punjab Lok Congress (PLC). In the 2022 assembly election, the PLC allied with the BJP, but the alliance failed to win a seat for Amarinder Singh’s party. AAP swept the election with 92 seats, while Congress was reduced to 18.Amarinder joined the BJP in September 2022, and his PLC was merged with it.The electoral record provides the context for the renewed speculation, but it does not establish that bringing Amarinder back would reverse Congress’s fortunes. The party’s 2022 defeat followed a wider political shift in Punjab, including AAP’s rise and Congress’s internal divisions.

Pargat Singh’s leadership test

Meanwhile, Pargat Singh’s appointment has put a new leader at the head of a state unit that has repeatedly struggled with factional disputes. A former India hockey captain and three-time MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment, he was associated with Sidhu during the 2021 confrontation with Amarinder Singh and had publicly questioned the previous government’s delivery on election promises.Pilot called Pargat a “unifying captain”, saying the new president has reached out to state leaders and received public support. He has also invoked the team metaphor to describe Congress’s approach to the election.“You are one captain who’s got a fantastic team, and the captain is only as strong as his team,” Pilot said he had told Pargat. His appointment, replacing Warring as state chief, was particularly important in the backdrop of an internal tussle between Warring and Channi camps.Punjab Congress has spent months grappling with a bitter power struggle between the camps of state chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and former CM Charanjit Singh Channi. The feud spilled into public view through rival sloganeering, poster wars, clashes at party events and boycotts during visits by then state in-charge Bhupesh Baghel. The high command’s July compromise, retaining Warring while appointing Channi to head the campaign committee, failed to end the friction. After Sachin Pilot replaced Baghel as Punjab in-charge in September, Warring eventually resigned on October 2, and Pargat Singh was appointed the new state chief. With the Congress leadership now sending the open-door signal to Captain Amarinder, the question is how Pargat’s team would accommodate a strong-headed former CM with a history in the party. Moreover, the issue is not limited to Amarinder Singh. In the upcoming months, Congress must also manage the transition from Warring, who led the state unit from April 2022 until October 2026.

No CM face, but several leadership questions

Congress has also decided against projecting a CM face for the 2027 Punjab election.Pilot said the party would fight as a team and decide who should lead the state after securing the mandate, following consultations with workers, leaders and MLAs.“We are fighting together as a team. Let the team win. And then we’ll decide who gets to do what job,” he said.

In June, Amarinder Singh shared that Rahul Gandhi wished him on his birthday.

The party has several experienced leaders, including Partap Singh Bajwa, Sukhjinder Randhawa, Charanjit Singh Channi and Warring. Pargat’s appointment adds a new organisational chief to that mix, while the question of Amarinder’s possible return remains unconfirmed. For the high command, the practical issue would be defining the role of each leader without undermining the other.

What could Captain Amarinder’s return mean

Amarinder Singh’s long tenure in Punjab politics, his experience as CM and his association with national security and border-state issues are part of his public political profile. A return could give Congress another experienced voice in its campaign, while his criticism of the BJP could offer a new line of political debate. The Congress may gain from his name, polularity and political history but it is unlikely that he would have any active role owing to his age.But the political costs would depend on the terms of any return. His 2021 exit followed a major leadership confrontation, and Pargat was part of the state leadership aligned with Sidhu during that period. Reconciliation would therefore involve not just Amarinder Singh and the Gandhi family, but a state unit whose leadership has changed since he left.
